Design for the viewing distance
The most common banner mistake is too much text. A banner is read by people who are walking, at a distance, in a few seconds. A short headline and a logo is the maximum that works; detail belongs on something handed over.
Keep the important content in the upper half, since the lower portion is often obscured by people or furniture.
Size, width and length
Ribbon banners come in a range of widths and lengths, and the right combination depends on where it hangs. Measure the space first, including the fixings, because a banner that is slightly too long has nowhere to go.
For a banner spanning a doorway or a table, a narrower width with a longer run reads better than a wide banner crammed into the space.
Fabric and reuse
Dye sublimated satin and polyester hold color permanently, fold without cracking, and can be washed, which is what makes a banner reusable across seasons.
Fold rather than roll for storage, and steam rather than iron directly on satin. Hang it the night before an event so the creases drop out.
