Capacity and the liner
Capacity is quoted in cans, and the figure assumes a perfect stack with no ice. Treat a twelve-can rating as roughly six cans plus enough ice to matter.
The liner is what fails. A heat-sealed, fully waterproof liner holds melted ice; a stitched liner seeps into the outer fabric and the cooler stops being used after the first leak into a car.
Formats
A soft cooler folds flat and is adequate for a few hours, which covers most actual use. A rolling cooler handles a full day and a longer walk. A hard cooler holds ice overnight and is a prize-level item.
