Hardware is what fails
The clip and the ring carry the whole load. A cast metal bolt snap or trigger clip holds; a thin stamped clip bends or opens, and a leash that releases a dog is a serious failure attached to your brand.
Check the stitching at the handle and at the clip. Bar-tacked webbing is what a good leash uses.
Width and sizing
Leash and collar width should match the dog. Three-eighths of an inch suits small breeds, half an inch to three-quarters suits medium, and one inch suits large dogs pulling hard.
Collars need sizing, which complicates an order. Leashes and bandanas do not, which is why they are the easier giveaway.
