Wooden or mechanical

A wooden pencil is cheap, sharpens, and suits volume distribution at schools, events, and polling stations. Look for smooth-writing graphite and a wood casing that sharpens without splintering.

A mechanical pencil never needs sharpening and lasts far longer, which makes it the better choice for a desk or a professional audience. Check the refill uses a standard lead size.

A carpenter pencil is flat so it does not roll off a surface, and it marks timber cleanly. For construction and trades audiences it is the correct product and it is recognized as such.

Sustainable options

Plantable seed pencils have a seed capsule at the end so the stub can be planted. They are charming and they require the recipient to actually plant one, which most will not do. Buy them because the material tells your story rather than expecting a garden.
