Reflective or illuminated
Reflective material returns light from a car’s headlights, which works only when a light is pointed at it. It needs no battery and never fails.
An illuminated clip light emits its own light and is visible from further away and from angles where headlights are not pointing. It needs a battery, which eventually dies.
The best programs give both, since they cover different situations.
Placement matters
Reflective material works best on moving parts of the body, ankles and wrists, because motion is what a driver’s eye catches. A reflector on a backpack is better than nothing and less effective than one on a wrist.
For workplace use, high-visibility clothing must meet the relevant ANSI class, and a bright color alone does not make a garment compliant.
