Collapsible is the format that gets kept
A pop-up lantern collapses to a disc and expands to full size, which means it stores in a glovebox or a drawer without taking up space. That is the single feature that determines whether a lantern is still in the house two years later.
COB panels produce a wide, even flood of light rather than a beam, which is what a lantern is for. Look for multiple brightness modes, because a lantern on full output in a small tent is unpleasant.
Power source decides the use case
Replaceable batteries are correct for an emergency lantern that will sit unused for years, because a recipient can revive it with batteries from any shop.
Rechargeable lanterns are more convenient for regular use and have a real weakness for emergency storage: a lithium cell left uncharged for two years may not come back. They also count as dangerous goods for air freight.
